"The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely the one who dropped it."

Lou Holtz (American Football Player, Coach and Analyst).

It only seems like yesterday that the season was about to start and now here we are with four rounds to go before the end of the home and away. Despite slowly coming out the other side of winter, July is looking like it will be the wettest in over a decade. But, on to the football.

It was Old Scotch's turn to come down to Shark Park and play us for a second time. Back in Round 8, the game at their ground was close up until 3/4 time before we were able to run out the game and win by 51 points. I'm sure Old Scotch were planning on not letting the same thing happen.

Once again it began as a tight affair. Carroll was back in the team after missing 5 matches with a hand injury and he was really making his presence felt. Our first goal came from a passage of play which started with Petering winning a free kick on the Tramway side wing and pumping the ball in long to a hard leading Gribbin. Gribbin put the ball deep into the forward line for Boyd to mark strongly and Boyd kicked his first for the day. Old Scotch hit back hard and they kicked the next 2 goals before Drew Kelly intercepted a handball and placed the ball in between McBain and Milne. It was read perfectly by Milne and we had our second. Major ball winners for the quarter were Petering and Kelly with 10 disposals each and Dean with 9. We went to the first break with the scores locked at 2-1-13 each.

The game didn't open up in the second quarter. Scoring had become a premium and our 'back six' were leading the charge in holding up the opposition. At one point you would have sworn that Gower had a magnet in the ball. For a five minute period Old Scotch kept trying to drive the ball forward only for Gower to get in the way and repel each attempt. He ended the quarter with 9 disposals and 4 towering marks. Braithwaite was also starting to have an influence on the game with 8 disposals for the quarter while Petering was again in the thick of things with another 9 disposals. But, it took until the 22 minute mark for the first and only goal to be scored for the quarter. Braithwaite found Gribbin on a lead and he marked just outside the arc. His kick towards goal drifted to the left and didn't quite make the distance. There were three Old Scotch players standing on the goal line between the goals while Dickinson positioned himself between the goal and the point post. It was the perfect spot to mark the incoming ball. He settled and then calmly slotted through the goal. The half time break saw us leading 3-5-23 to 2-2-14.

Cathcart was working his way into the game with 8 disposals and 3 inside 50s as was Edmonds (9 disposals). The intensity in the game lifted and the first goal was going to be very important. A ball up in front of the scoreboard saw Petering as the 'third man up' in the ruck contest thump the ball towards our goal. Despite being held by the jumper by McDonough (#31), Kelly took off and gathered the bouncing ball. He managed to break an attempted tackle from Furey (#44) and put through our first for the quarter. Four minutes later Old Scotch's Max Van Den Broek (#19) marked strongly and goaled. 12 minutes later Harlock (#40) added another for Old Scotch and they trailed by just one point. For the next seven minutes neither team could break away until Gower gathered a loose ball on the wing and fed the ball to Edmonds, who, in turn handballed to Braithwaite. He gave a long handball to Globan who then kicked the ball long to centre half forward. Kelly was waiting 'front and square' and gathering the ball off the pack, kicked his second for the quarter, which also broke the deadlock in the scores. A couple minutes later McLean marked an Old Scotch kick in from a behind and found Braithwaite on a lead. Braithwaite kicked truly and our lead was back out to 12 points. Our leading possession winners for the quarter were Braithwaite & Edmonds (9 disposals), Cathcart & Petering (8) and McBain & Gower (7). We went to the final change leading 6-6-42 to 4-6-30.

As it turned out, a win to Old Scotch would have put them just one game behind St Bedes and kept their hopes for the important double chance in the finals well and truly alive. They had everything to play for.

We kicked the first for the quarter and Old Scotch replied within a couple of minutes. This was repeated a further three times for the quarter. We would get a bit of a breathing space and Old Scotch would come again. After a relatively quiet third term, Dean saved his best for when it was needed. His six disposals and three effective inside 50s were crucial in setting up goal scoring opportunities when goals were hard to come by. Ward, who had also quiet third term, certainly made his presence felt in the final quarter. Milne kicked three for the quarter, Gribbin kicked one and Boyd kicked his second for the game. The final score was 11-7-73 to 8-6-54.

An interesting statistic is the free kick count for the last quarter which was 6 to Old Scotch and a big fat zero to us. The third quarter count was 8 to Old Scotch, 3 to us, and the total free kick count for the match was 29 to 15 in Old Scotch's favour. The free kick count doesn't have to be even and rarely is. The unevenness of the count is also NOT the umpires fault. But it is an interesting statistic all the same. On the goalkicking front, take away our two rushed behinds and the score line was 11 goals 5 behinds, a much better conversion then the past few weeks.

Next week we are at home to another of our local rivals, Hampton Rovers, before the third and final bye round. While Rovers currently sit on the bottom of the ladder, we can be certain it won't be an easy game.

Don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
