"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."

    Babe Ruth (Legendary American Baseballer).

The game against local rivals Hampton Rovers was interesting for a number of reasons. First, it was the long awaited debut of ex-Sydney Swans/St Kilda player Adam Schneider for Beaumaris, second, the Senior debut of U19 player Jak Nardino for Beaumaris and third, it was the debut for Hampton Rovers of a young Under 19s player of theirs by the name of Matthew Rieniets, the youngest son of our backline coach Tim. (Not sure how many Dads happen to see his Son's senior debut from the opposition coaches' bench).

It was top of the table verse bottom of the table. But, if we go back in history to Round 14 of 2011, we entered a game when we were in 6th position on the 'B' grade ladder (one win outside the top four) and Hampton were on the bottom with zero wins. Needless to say that day we lost, at home, 12-12-84 to 17-13-115. Also, on that day Carroll, Murton, Edmonds and Petering were all playing as was our current coach Haynes. Thankfully history doesn't always repeat itself.

In the first quarter it seemed as though the coach forgot to tell Petering, McBain and Dean that they should share the ball around. Between the three of them they accounted for 35% of our team's total disposals for the quarter. As a team, we didn't quite match the first quarter disposals of Round 12 against Parkdale, but, with 120, were just 2 shy. McBain had 8 kicks and 9 handballs, Petering 6 and 9 while Dean had 9 and 1. Unfortunately it didn't translate to any great results on the scoreboard. As it happened, Hampton were the first to score a goal when a quick kick from a stoppage found the Rovers' Turner (#31) about 20 metres out directly in front. Another 6 minutes passed before we were able score our first goal. That occurred when a Hampton kick out to the forward pocket saw Kelly smother the next kick and the ball bounced back towards our goal. There was a footrace between Fletcher (#1) and Kelly to gather the loose ball. They both arrived at the same time but Kelly side-stepped Fletcher as he gathered the ball and with a blind turn kicked our first goal from the goal line. At the quarter time break Brayden referred to the goal as one of the goals of the season but questioned the spirit of the team when only four players made the effort get around him. Kelly kicked another 5 minutes later and we went to the first break dominating the disposal count but only leading 2-3-15 to 1-2-8.

The questioning of the spirit of the group did cause a response. While Petering was still picking up disposals as he liked, another 'lazy' 12 for the quarter, Kelly had 9, Cathcart was getting busy with 7 and a goal, McBain also had another 7, Edmonds, Di Natale and Schneider had 6 with Schneider also kicking his first goal for the club (Hopefully the first of many more to come). In the end we added 7 goals for the quarter, 3 coming in just 3 minutes. The ball movement was picking up and we restricted Hampton to just 3 behinds. We went to the half time break leading 9-7-61 to 1-5-11.

The third quarter started with a rush. While we lost the centre clearance and Hampton kicked long to their forward line, McLean brought the ball to ground for Gillespie to gather and find Petering on the wing. A quick handball to Scott then a long handball to first gamer Jak Nardino allowed the debutant to centre the ball perfectly for Gribbin to run onto. We had our first goal less than a minute into the quarter. Unfortunately, Hampton kicked the next 3 goals in just under 5 minutes. By quarter's end we'd added 6 goals to Hampton's 4. Petering was slowing up a little with just 11 disposals for the quarter. Boyd was having an influence on the game by covering a lot of ground and gathering 9 disposals, 6 marks and 2 goals for the quarter. Nardino was starting to adjust to the change of pace from the Under 19s and he showed he is comfortable playing at the Senior level by gathering 5 disposals for the quarter. We increased our lead at the final break to 61 points. 15-10-100 to 5-9-39.

Good sides finish off teams and that was the task at hand for the final quarter. Petering was tiring and only managed 8 disposals for the quarter. With 2 goals each to Boyd and Gribbin and one to Petering we were on our way to a 100 point margin. However, with literally seconds left on the clock a tumbling ball kicked into Hampton's forward line bounced cruelly over the head of McLean and Hampton were able to score their only goal for the quarter. The final score was 20-14-134 to 6-10-46.

Petering finished the game with a season high 46 disposals at an 80% efficiency plus 2 goals, McBain managed 35 at an 89% efficiency and Dean finished with 26 at 85% efficiency. Gribbin kicked 5.3 for the day while Boyd finished with 4.2. In the end we amassed 435 disposals to Hamptons 268.

We now move into the third & final bye of the season and just 3 home and away games remaining; Fitzroy (away), Old Brighton (home) and Ajax (away). It was a particularly good day for the club with all 3 seniors teams winning and both Under 19s also coming home with the points. 5 games - 5 wins!.

As always, don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
