Rd 4 and another of the local Derbys. This time St Bedes/Mentone. With five changes to last weeks side, bring it on.

Sam McBain was back in the senior side for his first game of the season and picked up nine disposals for the quarter. Six were handballs which help get the ball moving in several passages of play. But the usual suspects in Cathcart and Petering picked up 12 and 10 disposals respectively for the quarter. While we were starting to move the ball quicker it still took until the 13:30 minute mark for the first goal to be scored when Paul Wintle nailed one from the arc to give St Bedes their first goal. It would be nearly seven more minute to the next goal which was the result of a Luke Edmondson blind turn when he picked up the ball on the outer forward flank and passed into Milne who kicked our first and only goal for the quarter. St Bedes, kicking with the aid of a strong breeze, would kick two more and we would go into the break trailing 3-2-20 to 1-3-9. But it was only the first quarter.

The second quarter started with a rush. A Petering clearance to McBain who then found Lovejoy on a lead and we had our first for the quarter in just under 50 seconds. In the first two minutes we only had five disposals but we had scored a goal and another shot on goal without St Bedes touching the football. McBain was obviously enjoying his return to Senior football picking up another nine disposals for the quarter but more telling was the four inside 50s. Ward also had nine disposals for the quarter but he had two goals to his name as well. Gribbin also back in the Senior team kicked a goal for the quarter and Di Natale showed some great evasion and side stepping skills to then lob a handball over to Dylan Gabron-Uhe who was able to snap a goal under pressure from some fast approaching opposition. With the use of the breeze we went into half time leading 6-8-44 to 4-4-28.

The third quarter was a more even affair, but St Bedes did have the aid of the breeze. McBain again helped himself to nine disposals for the quarter but it was his quick hands and vision that were impressive. Globan was quiet in the second quarter but he made up for it in the third. He finished with 12 disposals for the quarter and was showing up all over the ground. As in previous weeks the backline were holding steady and not making it easy for St Bedes. Lead by Dean and with Abbott, Gillespie, McLean, Grace and Braithwaite in support once St Bedes got inside 50 it wasn't easy. Dean also managed to drop in another long bomb goal for the quarter. Grange kicked one and Ward added another to go with the two he kicked in the second quarter. At the three quarter time break we went to the huddle leading 9-12-66 to 7-7-49.

As with the third quarter we didn't waste anytime kicking our first goal for the quarter. St Bedes got the first clearance out of the middle but the ball was bobbing around without a clear possession by either team. Then Petering picked off a St Bedes handball to send the ball forward to a leading Gower who played on and sent the ball high and long to our goal square. Gribbin, moving like a rover (sort of), swept up the ball and casually popped the ball in for a goal (I could be wrong but I think Milne standing a metre out from the goal line on his own with his arms out may have thought the handball was on). Anyway the goal came just on 45 seconds into the quarter. Both Edmonds and Milne would kick a goal for the quarter and Gribbin would get another. St Bedes only managed to kick one goal for the quarter and we ran out winners 13-17-95 to 8-11-59.

Sam McBain finished the day with the most disposals, 35 with an efficiency of 89%. Followed closely by Cathcart, Petering and Globan with 32, 31 and 31 respectively and Ward had 29 disposals to go with his three goals. In the end a six goal margin and we are sitting alone at the top of the ladder. Next up, Old Brighton down at Beach Rd. Don't you just love footy.

Go sharks.
