"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work." - Vince Lombardi

Five rounds in with five wins and sitting alone at the top of the ladder. We could probably sit back and think 'how easy is this?' But then football can be a funny game and there are still 13 rounds to go. While I know it is a well worn cliche it really is 'One game at a time'. But we did play some exciting football against Old Brighton.

The first quarter probably didn't go the way we planned. Old Brighton had three goals on the board in the first 22 minutes and we could only manage 5 behinds. Add to this we were kicking with the aid of the wind. But this team has shown over the first five rounds an ability to fight out each quarter to the very end. When the quarter finished we had added three goals in the last six minutes of the quarter. Two to Milne and one to Cathcart but Old Brighton had kicked another and at the quarter time break we trailed 4.4:28 to 3.6:24.

The second quarter was a totally different affair. Nick Dickinson, playing his first senior game for the season, had the first goal on the board in just under 2 minutes. By the end of the quarter he would add another two. With only three kicks for the quarter that wasn't a bad return. It was a quarter in which we were in control. We had 75 kicks to Old Brightons 45 and 36 handballs to their 24. We would add a further four goals to Murton, Gribbin, Milne and Lovejoy. Major ball winners for the quarter were : Cathcart 12 disposals (7 kicks and 5 handballs), Grange 11 disposals (9 and 2), Murton 10 disposals (5 and 5) and McBain 9 disposals (7 and 2). The ball movement in taking the ball from one end of the ground to the other, in most cases to score a goal, was very impressive. Gone was the stop, mark and kick style of play, replaced with a fast running, quick ball movement style of play. By the time the quarter ended Old Brighton had scored a solitary goal around the 20 minute mark of the quarter. We went to half time leading 10.8:68 to 5.6:36.

The third quarter started just like the second. This time Cathcart kicked the first of his three goals for the quarter in just under a minute and a half. Three minute later and in the space of literally two minutes, we had goals to Gower(4:59), Milne (5:46) and Murton (6:39). It was about to get a little ugly. We were winning the clearances out of the middle and again we were dominating the disposal count (59 kicks to 32 and 36 handballs to 19 for the quarter). Cathcart had the ball on a string with 8 kicks and finished with three goals for the quarter, Milne now had five goals for the game and Will Edmonds was starting to get into the game. By the end of the quarter we had kicked eight goals while Old Brighton were kept scoreless. We were leading 18.12:120 to 5.6:36.

While we took a little while to get going in the last quarter it eventually came with another rush. In just over three minutes we kicked 4 goals, Edmonds (4:20), Di Natale (5:27), Cathcart (6:51) and Lovejoy (7:38). Old Brighton would kick two more goals for the quarter while we would again add eight for the quarter and Edmonds would finish with 12 disposals (8 and 4) and three goals for the quarter. By the end of the game we had run out comfortable winners 26.15:171 to 7.10:52. While it was an easy win in the end I'm sure the return match in Round 17 will be a lot harder.

Don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
