One of the great stories to come out of the club in 2019 has been our Seniors making the Finals, which gets underway for us on SUNDAY at Box Hill Oval @ 2:30pm.
Coming into this season the situation looked somewhat ominous for our Senior side with a number of retirements, departures, Rep footy commitments and injuries casting a question mark over the club's capacity to maintain Premier B status. Simply put, it was going to be tough, no matter which way you looked at it.
But Head Coach Bluey McKenna had different ideas. Right from the start, Bluey made a call to go for youth, immediately promoting a number of U19 players to the Senior side. It was a daring move to have so many inexperienced and young players exposed to Senior footy all at the same time. But as the season wore on it became clear that this team was starting to gel and mid season victories against Uni Blacks and Grammarians gave everyone at the club great encouragement.
Despite some glitches along the way, including a couple of unfortunate suspensions and one or two unexpected loses, the guys have maintained their spot in the Top 4 and now face flag favourites Uni Blacks on Sunday.
This will be a massive test as Blacks were expected to win promotion last year but lost a Preliminary Final to Old Carey, in a surprise result. So they will be pumped up for this game.
But so will we...
To our Senior boys....you have given us much to cheer about this year. Your determination and your resilience has been outstanding. You've done the club proud.
So good luck on Sunday, the whole club is behind you.
(Footnote: the fixturing gods were against us this week with the Seniors game being allotted to a Sunday when we have 5 Junior Grand Finals on the same day - hopefully we will be able to spread ourselves across the different venues and cheer on the Blue & Gold to a number of victories).
