Sometimes a day starts so well then just turns to S@#T before it's over. The weather on Saturday was just about perfect for football. Not too hot, not too cold, a slight breeze but nothing to favour one particular end, overcast for part of the day, an oval without a cricket pitch in the middle and a near perfect covering of grass. What else could we ask for? It all started very well as we watched the Reserves go through their paces and get over the line against Old Scotch. All we needed to do was come to play against local rival St.Bedes, make our way back up to Premier A and then enjoy a Beaumaris double Grand Final day in two weeks time. All sounded great, but sometimes the football gods don't smile on you, or rather, the opposition have the same plan and execute it a little better. Before our team ran out on the ground we added our captain Tom Dean to the list of outs from the team that was announced on Thursday. But that is all part of football and both teams had 22 players each.

The first quarter didn't start too well with the opposition's Richards (#9) kicking the opening goal within 3 minutes after a St.Bedes tackle popped up a loose ball. For the next 10 minutes neither side could score then McBain blind turned out of a pack and then quickly handballed for Kelly to score our first goal. Through the quarter Petering had the 'ball on a string' and picked up 13 disposals and, with 18 hit-outs, Cumming was doing his best to give our on-ballers first use of the ball. Unfortunately St.Bedes had managed another two goals before the quarter was done and we went to the first break trailing 3-4-22 to 1-4-10.

Things started to turn our way in the second quarter. Ward began getting his hands on the ball (8 disposals) as did Coote and Edmonds with 10 each while Cumming was not letting up in the ruck and he managed 19 hit-outs for the quarter. McBain, Gribbin and Milne each kicked a goal but we were still a little wayward and we also added four behinds for the quarter. Three of those were from set shots and they were going to come back and haunt us a little later in the game. On the plus side, our backline was standing very strong and despite St.Bedes entering their forward 50 on 14 occasions, they didn't trouble the scorers at all. We went to the half time break leading 4-8-32 to 3-4-22.

So, at the halfway mark, neither team was in total control and it was still anybody's game. But, after just over two minutes into the 3rd quarter a poor pass to the feet of Cumming resulted in a spilled mark, and then a blind kick around the body gave the ball back to St.Bedes. They were able to find Robertson (#5) outside the arc and he went back and kicked St.Bedes' first for the quarter. Four minutes later it was St.Bedes turn to turn the ball over when a switch kick was intercepted by McBain, he handballed to the running Petering who in turn found Gribbin for an answering goal. However, St.Bedes then scored 3 goals on end before Milne kicked his second and the last goal for the quarter. Ward finished with 10 disposals for the quarter and Cumming added another 15 hit-outs. We went to the final break trailing by a solitary point, 7-5-47 to 6-10-46.

Football matches can turn very quickly. Just over a minute into the final quarter Milne had his third goal. Two minutes later he had his fourth and the game was starting to turn. We were now leading by 11 points and it looked like we might go on with it. But, St.Bedes had their own idea about how the game was going to end. They scored three goals in quick succession and regained the lead. Milne kicked his fifth goal but St.Bedes finished the game off with another four goals. The stats for the quarter tell a little bit of the story, Beaumaris, 53 disposals, St.Bedes, 83. Missed 'first options' and some 'hurried kicks' can often mean a missed shot at goal and, when the opposition scores from turnovers, result in a 12 point turn around. The final margin was 27 points.

Sometimes when you watch a game that your team loses you walk away a little despondent, particularly if it is a Final. But often, if you get the chance to watch the match again on video it can appear quite different. No doubt, St.Bedes played exceptionally well and deserved the win. But, we made some mistakes that if corrected may turn the result. Skill and ability cannot be changed significantly in a week or two but mistakes can generally be eliminated quickly. The only issue now is to bring our best to Old Scotch and have another crack at St.Bedes. Man, a week can be a very long time in football!

But still, don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
