"I never left the field saying I could have done more to get ready and that gives me piece of mind."

     Manning (Quarterback American Football)

Oops. Lost track of the days.

Round 6 and another local Derby. This time against an old rival in 'Hampton Rovers'. We just love beating each other and doesn't matter where we both are on the ladder. But we are on the top of the ladder having not lost a game and Hampton are on the bottom of the ladder having not won a game. So it should have been easy. Somewhere along the line someone forgot to tell Hampton just how it was meant to be played out. Kicking against the wind they kicked the first goal of the game and at the 17 minute mark had 68 disposals to our 43 and had kicked two goals to our one. They had the upper hand. But as mentioned in previous reviews this team doesn't just roll over. Dean, McBain and Braithwaite started to get on top in the backline and Petering was picking up possessions all over the ground. Once we got going we scored pretty quickly. Twice we kicked two goals in a row in as many minutes. When the siren sounded for the end of the quarter we were leading 6-3-39 to 2-1-13.

The second quarter started a little like the first with Hampton kicking the first goal of the quarter within 80 seconds. But kicking into the wind we struggled to kick the ball with any real efficiency. Of the 48 kicks we had for the quarter only 21 were effective and we only managed to go inside 50 on five occasions. Our only goal for the quarter came at the 28 minute mark. Fortunately Hampton were only able to kick three goals for the quarter. Gillespie was providing some drive from the back pocket and Carroll was winning in the ruck but Braithwaite was the only player to have at least three effective kicks for the quarter. This was pretty much our worst quarter for the season so far. However, we still went in the long break leading still leading 7-3-45 to 5-6-36.

I wasn't in the rooms at half time but I doubt the coaching group would have been happy with the way the game was being played. The free flowing, fast running and quick scoring style of play had gone missing. Which leads us to the 'Premiership Quarter' as it is often called. Lachie Howes returning to the senior side was starting to pick up kicks from Centre Half Back, Ward was damaging through the middle and sending the ball deep inside our 50 on five occasions. After a quiet first half Globan picked up eight kicks for the quarter while Dickinson was being effective in the ruck as well as down forward where he kicked two goals for the quarter. Lovejoy, Gribbin and Milne all kicked goals for the quarter. This time we allowed Hampton to go inside their forward 50 on only three occasions. By the end of the quarter the balance had been restored and we now led 12-9-81 to 5-6-36.

Even though we were kicking into a reasonably strong breeze for the final term we should have been able to put Hampton away. We kicked the first two goals for the quarter but Hampton were not going to just give up. Gillespie was still proving a handful for Hampton running out of a back pocket picking up 10 disposals for the quarter. Gribbin kicked another two goals for the quarter and Dickinson was winning in the ruck and chipped in for another goal, his third for the game. Petering picked up another 11 disposals for the quarter to give him 36 for the game. However, after keeping Hampton goalless in the third quarter they kicked seven straight in the last. The final score was 16-10-106 to 12-6-78.

Don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
