"One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team

     Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Here we are at Round 8 and it is One V Two. While it is 'one week at a time' I'm sure there was some anticipation about playing Old Scotch. After all they also came down after several seasons in the Premier Division.

McBain was back in side after a weeks break and Grace was also back due to a bye round in the VFL. It was going to be a 'cracker of a game'. Unfortunately the first quarter didn't quite pan out that way. Old Scotch had five goals on the board before we could register a score and maybe it was going to be a long cold afternoon. Our kicking efficiency was nothing short of terrible. Of the 47 kicks for the quarter only 23 were effective. There wasn't going to be a problem missing the goals like we did last week, we just couldn't get into a position to take any shots in the first place. But at the 24 minute mark of the quarter, Old Scotch had just kicked their fifth and things weren't looking good. At the ballup Petering reading the tap from the Old Scotch ruckman sent the ball long into our forward line for Milne to read it perfectly and we had our first for the game. By the end of the quarter we had two more effective disposals than Old Scotch but were trailing 5-1-31 to 1-0-6.

But as I have mentioned before this team and the coaching group don't panic. Particularly as there were still three more quarters of football to play. By the 14 minute mark of the second quarter we had goals kicked by Grange (from hard on the boundary), Cathcart (snap from the pack) and two to Milne (a shot from deep in the pocket and again reading the ball off the pack). It was 'game on'. Old Scotch would kick two more for the quarter but so would we. Milne would get another and Boyd would kick his first. Once again there wasn't much separating both teams on the disposal count. We only had two more handballs. Going into the long break we were ahead by a single point. 7-2-44 to 7-1-43. A point to note is that while we had registered two behinds they were both rushed. At this stage we really had 7 straight. A little bit better than last week.

Now we head into the third quarter. At this point we really had no one dominating the game from a statistics perspective. It was a pretty even spread across the team. A point the difference it was anyone's game, however, within 46 seconds of the quarter starting Grace marked a quick kick from Dickinson and the lead was out to 7 points. But the game was to stay tight. Something that would be expected when the top two teams are playing each other. We would kick another five goals for the quarter but Old Scotch would also kick four. Going into the final break we had a 14 point lead, 13-4-82 to 11-2-68. It looked like the last was going to be a classic.

But the last quarter was about to start just like the third. With the rain coming down and Old Scotch winning the centre clearance and kicking long inside their 50, it still only took 40 seconds for the ball to then travel back up the length of the ground for Lovejoy to snap one under pressure. As has happened before we kicked another three goals in as many minutes to open up a commanding lead. While Old Scotch still had a lot of the ball our defense were holding them at bay and they couldn't score. In the end they only managed a solitary behind. We added six for the quarter, starting with Lovejoy then Boyd, Gribbin, Milne, Grange and the final goal went to Milne. Taking his tally for the day to eight. From a statistical point of view this was a team that had ended up the closest to us for the season so far. By the end of the game we had four more disposals but they had one more effective disposal. In the end it was a 51 point margin, 19-6-120 to 11-3-69. With two rushed behinds we really had a score line of 19-4, a little different to last week.

This week we play Ajax to wrap up everyone having played each other.

Don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
