"If you ever dream of beating me you'd better wake up and apologize"

     Muhammad Ali.

As we head towards the winter solstice the daylight is getting shorter, the temperature is getting colder and the rains are coming but still we sit on top of the ladder a game and a half clear of Old Scotch. But we are also only half way through the season with a lot of football still to be played. There are a lot of things that can still happen and some things that I'm sure Brayden and the boys would like to work on and improve. Maybe in the area of goal kicking for one.

However, the game started pretty well with a well weighted kick from Lovejoy finding Boyd who went back and kicked his first goal of the game all within the first minute of the quarter starting. With McBain and Dean controlling the back half of the ground they weren't making things easy for Ajax. Cummings in for his first game of the season was also making his presence felt controlling the ruck contests and giving our onballers first use of the ball. Boyd would kick another goal at the nine minute of the quarter to be our only goal kicker for the quarter. We went to the first break leading 2-1-13 to 1-1-7.

The second quarter started with Ajax scoring a goal within a minute of play starting. Maybe things were going to get tight. But a couple minutes later Petering was awarded a free kick just outside the arc. He went back and coolly slotted the ball through the big sticks. Cathcart was starting to get a bit of the ball as was Dean who was still controlling the back half of the ground. Cummings was still in control of the rucks and McLean was also starting to have some influence on the game. Other goal kickers for the quarter were Ward, Milne and Lovejoy. Unfortunately we also kicked five behinds and had one complete miss. Ajax were playing a kick, mark, kick style of play. Slowing the game down. But they managed to kick three straight for the quarter. We went to the long break leading 6-6-42 to 4-1-25.

As in previous weeks we started to control the game during the third quarter. Again Cummings was controlling the hit outs, Edmonds was starting to accumulate some touches through the middle of the ground and McLean was continuing his good work from the second quarter. Particularly as all his disposals were effective. Boyd followed his first quarter goals with another two in this quarter. Braithwaite slotted one nice and low from a tight angle right in front of the club rooms. Edmonds kicked one and we were now leading by 36 points. Ajax could only manage one goal for the quarter and we went to the last break leading 10-8-68 to 5-2-32.

In the last quarter McBain led all players with 12 disposals, including 6 marks and five inside 50s. We would restrict Ajax to again only one goal. This was due in part to Howes and Gillespie repelling Ajax anytime they tried to go inside their forward line. Johns was also having a good second half, playing off the half back line making it difficult for Ajax. Goals for the quarter were kicked by Edmonds, Grange, Milne and Dickinson. By the end of the quarter with the light failing we had run out winners 14-12-96 to 6-4-40.

A win is a win but the conditions didn't really help a free flowing game style. By the end of the game we had a hundred more effective disposals than Ajax and had kicked nearly the same number of behinds as goals. McBain led the stats sheet with 25 effective disposals followed by Edmonds with 18. Boyd finished with 4 goals while Edmonds and Milne were the only other multiple goal kickers with 2 each. It was another win but it was a slow ball moving game. Maybe we can put that down to the weather.

As always, don't you just love the footy.

Go sharks.
