Jack Gunston nearly missed out on an AFL opportunity when he dislocated his elbow two weeks from the start of the 2009 TAC Cup. He was sidelined for eight weeks which damaged his chances of impressing scouts throughout the season. He returned to football with Haileybury College and made his way back into the Sandringham Dragons side for the last six games. His last three games impressed Adelaide recruiters. "I only saw three of his (TAC Cup) games, but I liked his competitiveness and the way he went at the ball," Adelaide recruiting manager Matt Rendell said. "I saw him play at full-forward and at fullback and I liked the way he went about playing the full-back role even though he was undersized."
Jack was selected as a versatile key position player who has the capabilities to play both medium and tall, up forward and down back. His overhead marking is outstanding as is his continual presenting and follow-up efforts. His 2.98sec 20m sprint at the Victorian screening highlighted his pace off the mark.
"Jack was drafted to the Adelaide Crows with pick 29 in the 2009 National Draft. He played 122 games with the Junior Club. Was a member of the 2002 Under 11 Premiership side of which he was also the Captain and was awarded the medal for Best on Ground. He also played in the Under 15 and 16 Division 1 Premiership sides in 2006 and 2007.
After the 2011 season Jack requested to be traded back to Victoria and was subsequently traded to Hawthorn.
