Kate Hore was a trailblazer for the Beaumaris Football Club. Kate was one of the few girls to play footy with the boys back in the mid 2000’s. She certainly played her heart out and her coach Danny Kelly, when recounting those days, said “she held her own every game, was extremely competitive and very skillful….a natural athlete”.
Once Kate became an U14 she was forced to give footy away, because rules didn’t allow girls to play in that age division. In those days we didn’t have ‘Girls’ Teams. Since then, it’s all changed.
Kate ended up playing 68 BFC Junior games, as well as two years as a Beauie AUSKICKER.
These days, Kate is one of the gun players in the AFLW. Last year she was selected in the AFLW 'All Australian’ team and won the prestigious ‘Goal of the Year’ award in the same season. Her partnership with Daisy Pearce is renowned.
Today, Kate came back to her Junior club, the BFC, to recount her formative years as part of a video promotion for the Melbourne Football Club. She loves the fact that girl’s football has exploded at the BFC and she said she’d love to come back for a ‘Shark of the Month’ (or 2), because she has so many fond memories of her ‘Shark of the Month’ days.
Joining Kate today was BFC Senior Womens player Jemina Savage for a chat and a kick to kick. Jemina welcomed Kate back to the club of her origin and showed her around the club rooms and the oval.
All girls playing at the BFC can aspire to the heights Kate has reached; no doubt determination and desire has played a big part in Kate’s success. But as coach Danny Kelly reminded me today, Kate practiced her kicking constantly - there’s something in that….
Thank you, Kate Hore. ’Once a Shark, Always a Shark’
Fins Up and Go Sharks!
