Senior Teams pay Tribute

Sam McLean bags 4 goals for the Senior Women, the U19s come from behind for an emotional win and the Thirds bang on 25 goals in a mixed round for Senior teams as we honour three great Sharks.

It was a top of the ladder clash for our Senior Men on Saturday, however, after a tremendous first half which saw us lead by 22 points, Uni Blacks surged with the wind in the 3rd Qtr to open up a match winning lead going into the last.

It was a disappointing outcome considering how well the guys played in the opening two stanzas.

Come the last Qtr it was a matter of the Blacks concentrating on defending the lead, which they did very well. No doubt they’re a well drilled outfit and our team will benefit from important inclusions in the forthcoming weeks, as well as what they take out of this high-pressure game.

Our best player was Josh Ward (3 goals) who was courageous in defeat, unrelenting the whole game. He knew from experience the importance of this game and threw everything into influencing the outcome. Other good players included Nat Bazzani who never conceded a contest, Conner Murphy and Riley Milhailovic who worked hard all game through the middle of the ground and Ben Mathews who was tireless from his wing.

Like the Seniors, the Reserves had a good first half, but a strong 3rd Qtr by Blacks was enough to secure the win. Both teams failed to score in the 4th. This game welcomed back dual Club Champion Scott Gower for his first game this season. Dawitt McNeish continued his tremendous form, while Matteo Barba, up from the Thirds, kicked 3 goals.

On Friday night the 3rds were dominant against Monash Uni at Oak St, the guys securing top spot on the ladder. A powerful 10 goal first Qtr set the tone for the match. In all there were 14 different goal scorers for the home team. In such a convincing win, best players are difficult and unfair to assess, however Lachie Jones, Andreas Baruhas and Ben Earney were outstanding.

The U19s were under the pump at ¾ time trailing by 18 points, but stepped up a gear to put on 6 goals in the last to run out 16 point winners. It was a tremendous comeback. The boys proudly wore their ‘Dare to Hope’ socks in honour of the late Paul Dear and the campaign set up by the Dear family to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer. It was significant that both Nate and Calsher Dear played in this game, so it was an emotional victory as well as an important one for this team. They sit 2nd on the ladder between St Bedes (1st) and Mazenod (3rd). Spencer McLennan was a standout player.

It was a tremendous performance by the Senior Women in 'gale' like conditions to defeat Old Mentonians at their Keysborough playing fields. The girls showed poise when playing into the wind and hit the throttle when going with it. Sam McLean kicked 4 goals to bring her season’s tally to 36.

Lots of other top individual efforts, but non better than Caley Ryan who's ability to continually mark the ball in the swirling wind was outstanding. She repelled numerous attacking forays by the opposition. The Tysoe triad (Taylah, Holly & Georgia) were brilliant ball winners, Georgia kicking a fabulous goal in the 4th Qtr from an acute angle under pressure. Other good players included Lani Hilford and Ella Southgate. Great team effort.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the club with the passing of Ray Gunston, Paul Dear and Life Member Geoff Wright. As a tribute, all Senior players wore black armbands to honour these three men who have had such a strong association with the BFC and given so much to the club.

Go Sharks!
