Senior Women Chasing History

Back in 2017 the Beaumaris Football Club’s inaugural Seniors Women’s team played its first game to a huge crowd at Oak St against Monash Uni.

For the record, we won that game 11.5-71 – 2.4-16. It was a landmark event in the history of the club. Playing in that game was Pip Atkins, Loz Haringsma, Thea Brown and Gen Gori. Thea kicked 3 goals and Pip 1.

Five and a bit years on these 4 girls will play in the first BFC Women’s team to compete in a Grand Final, which is against Old Camberwell at Trevor Barker Oval @ 2:30pm.

At about the same time in 2017 five girls were playing in our juniors in the Under 16 Div 1 team. Those girls Steph Warmuz, Rosie Byrne, Caley Ryan, Ella Southgate and Sienna Tedde will also play in Sunday’s game. It’s great testimony to our Junior program and to the girl’s loyalty.

There are many other back stories to this game:

Coach Daz Behrendorff, who is a wonderful contributor to the club, coaching not only this team but also the Under16 Div 3 Girls on Sundays, which his daughter plays in.

Former Club Champions, Nadia Eldred and Sarah Collins who have been tremendous players for the club, Nadia being the granddaughter of one the Club’s founding fathers and former President, Peter Eldred.

Captain Sam Baisas who could play anywhere at the highest level, but chooses to play at the club she loves.

To the girls who came across from the MCC because they wanted to be part of a club environment.

To rookie Sam McLean who has kicked an extraordinary 40 goals this season in her first year of footy, coming from a basketball background. She is also sister to Haydn who plays for the Sydney Swans.

Taryn Hurst, who has been a tremendous foil for Sam up forward and fits in playing footy around her job as a Policewoman.

Simone Marinelli who suffered a serious finger injury at the start of the season, which for a medical student is a concern. However, she has worked hard to get her finger right while staying extremely fit at the same time.

Danielle Royal who was in that inaugural team and is now the Assistant Coach.

Ellen Wood who was also in that first game, now sits on the Senior Committee.

To the 5 sisters playing in this team – three x Tysoe’s (Taylah, Holly & Georgia) and two x Van Der Water’s (Emily & Steph)

To all the girls – this is your time – you have gone through the season undefeated, let’s finish it off.

Special mention to the girls who missed out on selection – your contribution has been vital and this is your moment as well.

One thing we do know is you’ve all done the club proud

Come on girls!
