It was a magical day last Saturday for the annual ‘I Am Woman’ BFC Ladies Lunch at the Black Rock Yacht Club. It’s at this event that the ‘Woman of the Year’ award is announced.
The water glistened and the glasses clinked in the bright sunshine on the balcony overlooking the magnificent views towards the city skyline. It was a glorious day.
This was the Club’s first luncheon since 2019 and it didn’t let anyone down. This day was a far cry from the wet and freezing Sunday mornings at D-Mac and Oak St in the middle of July and the facing the washing basket after a muddy encounter with Mordy-Brae.
This was truly, ‘MUM’ time.
Guest speaker was local Federal Member Zoe Daniel who reminded the ladies that her Dad played 90 odd games for Essendon and how she was bought up in a ‘full on’ footy environment and how regrettably she never got the chance to play the game she loved. However, Zoe did mention that former ABC colleague Angela Pippos thought she would have made a great centre half back. Angela was also the person who suggested to Zoe that she would make a formidable politician and should run for parliament. Pretty good advice!
Zoe was also on hand to present the ‘Woman of the Year’ award to a very surprised Maidie Hurlston, a well-deserved and popular winner. Maidie has been a tireless volunteer for many years now and has taken on many roles. She is currently U16 Boys team’s coordinator.
In a way, after 2 cancelled years because of Covid, this day was all about the Beaumaris Football Club ladies, without whom there is no BFC.
Special thanks to Fiona Love (MC), Carli Holt and Melissa Davies who organised and run proceedings, the Junior Committee and Nicki Spencer and Tracey Francis who represented the Senior Committee.
And finally….
congrats to Maidie, she joins a special group of Mums to have won this award. A day she’ll never forget.
