Ben’s Boys do it Again – U16 Div 3 Boys Nail the 2022 Premiership
For Coach Ben Stainforth winning a premiership for the BFC is not a new experience. Back in 2019 when coach of the U13 Div 5 Boys, his team recorded a memorable victory over East Sandy in a game they weren’t expected to win, coming from 3rd on the ladder.
A number of those boys turned out again last Sunday to win another premiership in the U16 Div 3 team.
Going back even further, in 2011 when our U11 Div 2 side won the GF there were players currently in the U16 Boys teams. Pretty amazing effort to win 3 flags in 6 years for some of these boys. Keep in mind 2 of those years were lost to Covid, so really 3 flags in 4 years.
This Div 3 team is arguably the strongest ‘seconds’ team in the club. This season they finished on top of the premiership ladder and completed the season with a 15 & 2 winning record.
Going into a GF with high expectations can be problematic and a jittery start confirmed this, with Highett up by 10 points at quarter time, however a measured coach declared, “Now that we’ve got the nerves out of our system, let’s play some footy.” The guys then kicked 10 goals to 2 for the rest of the game to run out 45 point winners.
Lachlan Grant was brilliant in front of goals kicking 5, while Harry Hurlston was a popular winner of the Umpires ‘Best Player’ award with brilliant 4 quarter game.
Final score: BFC 11.13-79 – Highett 5.4-34
Special mention to Team Manager Adam Miller who was tremendous support for Coach Stainforth all season and to age group coordinator Maidie Hurlston for her tireless work managing the U16 Boys.
There's no doubt Ben has got a great rapport with his players, a mutual respect that goes a long way in a footy team.
