Jak Nardino, Rosie Byrne & Nic Plevritis take out the major awards at this year’s Best & Fairest awards.
It was an emotion filled evening last Thursday night as the club farewelled six champions, Sean Coote, Matt Petering, Nick Loucaides, Mick De Fontenay, Scott Gower and Rob Cathcart. You could hear a pin drop when the Ian Millar produced video dedication was played to the assembled audience. To view the full video Click Here
Following his win in the VAFA Premier B Best & Fairest on Wednesday night, Jak Nardino continued his great year by winning the club’s B&F, the Mick Kirkby Trophy last Thursday night. Two big nights for Jak. Not far behind Jak in the votes was Connor Murphy who finished second and also collected the award for Best Finals Player.
Rosie Byrne capped off a brilliant season by winning the Womens B&F. This takes on greater significance as it comes in a Premiership winning year. Rosie is great BFC story having played all her footy at the club, starting many years ago in the Juniors. Runner up was 2019 winner Sarah Collins. It was a tightly fought contest with a number of players in contention right down to the final few games. Sam McLean was acknowledged for being the VAFA medal winner for leading goal scorer.
The Damien Guidolin U19 B&F winner was Nic Plevritis. Nic is co-captain and has enjoyed a standout season in the U19s team, which performed so well this year, reaching the preliminary final. Coming second was Spencer McLennan who also had an outstanding year. It was also great to see all three Co-Captains feature in the awards (Nic, Nate Dear & Jayden Rodwell).
Popular winner of the Reserves trophy was Matt Lucas who has been a rock for our ‘seconds’ for a number of years. Matt’s leadership qualities were on show throughout the season and when accepting the B&F award was humble in victory praising his teammates and coach Lachlan Batt. Runner up Dawit McNeish was also a popular choice.
The Thirds B&F was won by their captain Andreas Baruhas whose inspired play took his team to a Preliminary final, which regrettably, was lost in overtime. Lachie Jones capped off a tremendous season by picking up the runner-up award.
The prestigious Tim Russell ‘Mateship’ Award was won jointly by Club Captain Joel Di Natale and Reserves Captain Mick De Fontenay. No more fitting winners than these two club stalwarts. Tim’s parents Annie and John were in attendance to present the award.
The Women's 'Spirit Of Mateship' Award for 2022 was also a tie, with Ella Southgate and Sarah Collins sharing this newly established award.
The Steve Caffyn Award for best Clubman was shared between Bill Linehan and Peter Caswell. Bill is the Seniors Team Manager, while Peter manages the Club’s media.
One of the highlights of the night was the awarding of ‘Life Membership’ to Tracey Francis. Tracey has been a massive contributor to the club for over 15 years, holding numerous positions on the both the Junior and Senior Committees, including the crucial role of Club Secretary. More recently Tracey has held down a position on the senior committee as well being Reserves Team Manager. Enormously popular, Tracey fully deserves this esteemed honour.
And finally, the night was a tribute to the work of the Senior Committee and in particular outgoing President Terry Lucas. In his address, prior to the Seniors awards, Head Coach Bluey McKenna paid special tribute to the work Terry has done these past 5 years, which includes the dissolution of the unsuccessful BSC venture, followed by two difficult years of Covid lockdowns. The Coach highlighted Terry’s resilience during this period and his ability to steer the club into a robust position both on and off the field. Brilliant work Tez.
