SIMON CHARLES MASSEY
BFC Life Member
16th Nov 1959 – 16th Feb 2023
Simon Massey was a typical sports minded youngster growing up in Beauy in the ‘70’s and he started playing footy and cricket with the Sharks as a junior participant. Although his physical attributes had some limitations, his enthusiasm was boundless, and he became a keen player and then later on, a very hard-working official with his family club, at which over the next fifty years, he made many friends amongst his colleagues and teammates. His father, Rolly, was also a keen Beauy supporter and at one time he was the Sharks’ Friday Night Raffle man at the Beauy pub.
Once Simon reached the Senior ranks his opportunities to play regularly were limited so instead, he threw his energy into helping out where he could, and over the next decades he can be seen in many Senior & Reserves Premiership photos where he had helped as a team manager or timekeeper and for thirty years he would rarely have missed a Senior match day. Simon was awarded his BFC Life Membership in 1991.
Unfortunately, as the years rolled on, Simon’s health deteriorated to such an extent that he was spending long stints in hospital and eventually lost the lower part of his leg. However, when possible, he still came to club functions and events, and when he joined a group of club friends who travelled to Peter Whitty’s funeral in Finley, his intelligence and conversational ability was noted by those in the same car with him on the journey.
There will be no public funeral held for Simon, only a private family ceremony, but there is a plan for a ‘Celebration of Life’ get together at the club in the future.
Thank you Simon, you'll be missed.
Go Sharks.
