Vale: Joyce Gardiner: 1929 - 2023
The BFC is deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Joyce Gardiner on 13th March aged 94.
Joyce was the loving wife of Des and mother of current and long term BFC committee member and Life Member Bryce Gardiner and his older brother Carl.
The Gardiner boys eldest brother Paul passed away just short of his 18th Birthday in 1974.
Carl played Under 13s for the Sharks and then concentrated his athletic pursuits predominantly on surfing and obviously Bryce’s involvement continues to this day. Joyce was aware of Bryce’s deep love for the BFC and the BCC and when Bryce moved into Scott Street help care for her, she would comment on how much time he spent at both Clubs and was greatly supportive of the work the club's do developing junior and senior sports players, plus also providing an enjoyable social setting for many locals in the Beaumaris community.
Joyce and Des moved to Scott Street Beaumaris in the 1950s and Joyce was involved in local community organisations from their early years.
Joyce was Treasurer of the emerging Beaumaris Art Group at one stage, and she worked often in the small BFC canteen in the 70s day assisting the fabled Gwen Macleod.
Joyce and Des took an active interest in the Sharks until the end of their lives and if they were around would not miss a Grand Final and fondly recalled the nail biting one point win over Old Caulfield at Sandy.
Joyce was very proud of her achievements teaching English as a second language at Noble Park Language Centre and volunteer work post that time. Across the last couple of years she enjoyed helping teach some the staff how to improve their English at Arcare Cheltenham, where she resided.
Joyce will be well remembered by many in the Beaumaris area and beyond, which is a testament to her generous spirit and willingness to help others, which endured right until the end of her long and fruitful life.
Joyce is pictured here with sons Bryce and Carl and daughter in law Lisa.
RIP Joyce Gardiner
