Round 7 was one of those rounds – a round of mixed results, some lowlights, and some highlights.
At Brunswick Oval, Fitzroy FC staged a ‘Smoking Ceremony’ prior to the Seniors game to acknowledge ‘Indigenous Round’. It was a great mark of respect and an affirmation of the amazing impact indigenous players have had on our national game. Well done to the Fitzroy Football Club.
Unfortunately, both our Seniors and Reserves suffered losses to a fast-improving Fitzroy club. There’s no doubt Fitzroy has put Premier B on notice and will be a handful for all Prem B teams at both Seniors and Reserves level. They remain undefeated in both grades.
Over at Marcellin, the Women’s team unearthed a potential star in young Gabi Trajer. Promoted from the Under 16s, Gabi played with skill, enthusiasm and endeavour to be our best for the win. Not bad in your Seniors debut. Mind you, Gabi is no stranger to rep footy having played 4 x Vic Metro games, 2 x Interleague games (selected captain) and 2 x U16s Dragons games. Keep you eye on her – Gabi Trajer. (pictured here receiving her Seniors jumper from Captain Sam Baisas and her U16s Assistant Coach Jemima Savage).
At Oak St the two U19s teams went one win and one loss. The U19 Div 3 team lost their way after half time against Williamstown CYMS, surrendering a good lead to lose a tight one. For Coach Selby it was a disappointing loss, particularly after making a strong start to the game and playing at home.
The Div 1 team certainly didn’t get things their own way against a very good Hampton side. In fact, the Rovers lead at half time. However, a ten-goal 2nd half allowed our boys to edge clear in the end. Calsher Dear with 5 goals was our best, followed by captain Angus Newman who is having a brilliant season.
On Friday night, our Thirds went down to Old Xavs after leading by 19 points at half time. In this division, Xavs remain the team to beat and our boys will have taken much from the game, coach Francis being optimistic post-game praising the guys for their effort and work rate.
