This Weekend 'Dare to Hope round

A big reminder that this weekend is the ‘Dare to Hope’ round that we hope will encourage more funding and awareness of pancreatic cancer, the disease that took the life of a beloved Shark and AFL champ, Paul Dear.

All 6 Senior teams will be wearing special ‘Dare to Hope‘ socks and the most courageous player from each game will receive a specially made ‘Dare to hope’ medal. It makes for a fascinating day.

Importantly, all teams will be ‘local’, including the 3rds who will be playing at home on Friday night.

The main challenge for the ‘Dare to Hope ‘Foundation is getting the broader community to recognise the propensity of pancreatic cancer and the incredibly low rate of survival for sufferers.

This is an amazing challenge for all involved and for the Dear family, this is their mission having been through a difficult and tough journey at the end of Paul’s life.

The BFC is proud to be part of this story. We share the hope and the vision so poignantly demonstrated by members of the family. On Saturday we caught up with Paul’s son Nate, someone who has played 139 games for the club, played 10 rep games and kicked 159 goals in the process. Nate personifies the ‘Blue & Gold’ spirit and at just 20 years of age has the football world at his feet.

As someone recently told this writer, “When Nate is on the lead running at full speed, the last place you want to be is in his path.” That’s pretty sound advice we reckon!
