Captain courageous inspires Senior Women to a sensational come from behind win to progress to the Grand Final.
There’s never been any doubt surrounding the courage of Women’s captain Sam Baisas. She’s been the benchmark for ‘head over the ball’ mettle throughout her career at the BFC. She leads the Senior Women’s team by actions and words, a rare gift.
Today, despite not feeling the greatest, Sam produced one of the great captain’s games against Old Melburnians. All game she was relentless, diving into packs, finding space where there wasn’t any and delivering precision handballs and kicks. With just minutes left on the clock and the game on the line, Sam marked the ball deep in the right pocket. It would take a great kick, on an acute angle to put us in front. But that’s exactly what she did. The team erupted.
It was a nerves of steel moment and summed up the captain’s performance across the whole game.
Other players deserve special mention.
Caley Ryan is well known to opposition teams for her intercept marking and long probing kicks. Shutting her down will go a long way to winning the game. From the start the opposition niggled her and tried to put her off her game, but she held firm taking some great marks across half back that repelled many an opposition forward move.
Caley was well supported in the back six by Ash Van Rooyen and Pip Atkins.
Other important contributors included Ella Southgate and Rosie Byrne up forward and Cass Newman in the middle.
But it was a brilliant team performance - everyone made a significant contribution against a very good Old Melburnians team.
Old Melburnians now play Marcellin OC in the Preliminary Final.
The Grand Final will be in a fortnight.
Final Score: BFC 4.7-31 – Old Melburnians 3.9-27
