Full Time Round 17

Huge result by our Thirds to defeat AJAX in the Preliminary Final last Sunday and advance to the Grand Final this coming Sunday against Old Xavs at Bill Lawry Oval at 9.00AM.

This means we will have 2 Senior teams in Grand Finals this Sunday, with the Women’s team set to face Marcellin OC at Elsternwick Park at 2.30PM.

It was a real fighting performance by the Thirds boys who were behind at every change, but produced when it countered in the fourth quarter to run out 11 point winners. It was a much better team performance than in the first semi against Old Xavs when they were below their best. They will take confidence going into the GF, but that will be balanced by a deep respect for the number 1 ranked Xavs team.

The Seniors, Reserves and U19s Div1 teams all recorded good wins. The Seniors can secure a top 4 position with a win against Old Trinity on Saturday, while the Reserves and U19s Div1 are already there, holding down 3rd and 1st places respectively in their divisions.

After a slow start against a determined AJAX, the Seniors clicked into gear in the 2nd half producing their best straight kicking performance of the season. Leading goal kickers included Matt Harms (6), Ben Hempel (6) and Jimmy Freeman (4). In the Reserves 15 players shared the goals around with Josh Ward kicking six.

The U19 Div 3 team did everything but win the game on Saturday. Ahead most of the game out at Williamstown, the boys lost the game in the last minute. They will have much to play for on Friday night away to 4th placed Collegians.

Meanwhile the Women’s team continue their preparation for Sundays big Grand Final against Marcellin (Sunday 2.30pm Elsternwick Park). Coach Darryl Behrendorff will have the unenviable task of selecting the final side.

Special congratulations to Tom O’Rourke who played his first Seniors game on Saturday against AJAX, up from the U19s. Tom, a key defender, played a great debut game. Tom is pictured here with his Dad and forwards coach Stephen Milne, who presented the jumper.

A big week coming up at the club with the Annual Sponsors dinner on Thursday night, then a massive weekend for the club with 2 Senior teams in Grand Finals and a number of Junior teams in Grand Finals and Preliminary Finals.
