It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for our Senior Teams on the weekend.
Unfortunately, our Thirds and Women’s teams both lost their Grand Finals. The boys in the Thirds played out of their skins to get within a goal of Xavs at ¾ Qtr time, defying predictions of a one-sided contest. They were brave right up to the final siren. For the team it was a successful season to play consistently well from round 1 and make the Grand Final. Credit to all the players and Coaches Mark Francis and Richards Evans on an outstanding season. Congratulations to Old Xavs.
The Women’s team suffered their first defeat in two years going down to a vastly improved Marcellin team. It was a shock defeat for our girls who were widely tipped to win their second consecutive premiership, however, Grand Finals have a way defying predictions. Marcellin took advantage of the wind in the 2nd quarter to put on five unanswered goals to set up their win. From that point the margin only grew, eventually winning by a convincing 36 points. Marcellin forward Zoe Glascott was unstoppable kicking 8 goals to be best on ground. For our girls it will be an opportunity to learn and grow from the experience. Well done to Marcellin and congrats to our girls and the coaches, Daz, Danielle and Rob on a magnificent season.
On Saturday we had a triple header at Oak St to close out the ‘home & away’ rounds for the Seniors, Reserves and U19 Div 1s, with all three teams winning. It was a ‘do or die’ game for our Seniors who had to win this game to ensure their place in the finals. In a strong performance, the team won by 44 points.
The Reserves will take solid form going into the finals but will face a strong test against Old Trinity who were good on Saturday.
The U19 Div1 Boys continued their outstanding form to remain undefeated this season. Despite losing on Friday night, the Div 3 U19s will take their place in the finals this weekend.
This means all six teams will have made finals, which is a tremendous achievement by the players and coaches.
Congrats to Mitch Kornberg who played his 100th game in the Thirds GF. Great work Mitch!
