It was a day of gripping Grand Finals for the five BFC teams involved last Sunday.
Of those five, we won 2 Premierships, the coveted U17.5 Div 1 Boys and the U18 Div 1 Girls, the pinnacle of boys and girls junior football.
The day began at Wattie Watson Oval where the U14 Div 4 Boys fell short against Ajax. Putting that result aside, this team has done extraordinarily well this season to finish on top of the ladder and compete so courageously in the finals.
Out at Columbia Park the U15 Div 4 Boys went into this game as rank outsiders up against a stand-alone team from Murrumbeena who had gone through the season undefeated. However, that didn’t deter our boys who well and truly were up for the fight. In the end, a solitary point separated the two teams in Murrumbeena’s favour. It was a gallant effort by our boys. Well done to all the players and Coach Chris Wells who almost pulled off the improbable.
Meanwhile, at Hurlingham Park the U16 Div 1 Girls went into their Grand Final with their confidence up after a great Prelim Final win last week, this despite injuries to key players. However, the girls fell short by just three points of achieving their goal. A number of Seniors girls who went out to support the team and their coaches Jemima and Darryl said the girls gave it everything. They said a couple of vital calls didn’t go their way at crucial times, which can happen. It was an intense game where either team could have won, unfortunately it wasn’t to be us. Tremendous effort though girls.
Earlier at Boss James Reserve, the U18 Girls hung on to win a cliff hanger against Prahran to take the prized U18 Div1 Girls premiership. Again, this game came down to the wire, our girls clinging on to win by just 5 points, holding out a surging Prahran with desperate defence. Sarah Love kicked 3 goals, while the tireless Tilly Clarkson won the ‘Best on Ground’ medal. Congrats to Paul Zahra and Damian Farrow who have been with these girls for many years. Brilliant win girls.
The Final game of the SMJFL season was the U17.5 Div 1 Boys GF at Boss James. This was always going to be a ripper game against Ormond who were the outstanding team all season. However, this was motivation for our boys who went behind early, but came back to prevail by just 4 points in front a big crowd. Owen Lazzari kicked 2 goals to be the sole multiple goal scorer, while the effervescent Harry Lewis won the ‘Best On Ground’ Medal. Well done the coaches Tom and Stuart Spencer and all the players on a fantastic win.
