Full Time Round's 2 & 3

Full Time Rounds 2&3 – 20/04/2024

It was Anzac Round for our Seniors Mens and Reserves on Saturday for two vital games against Old Haileybury.

The last time our Seniors played Old Haileybury was in the Premier B Preliminary Final in 2022, when we were outplayed. However, by 4:40 on Saturday afternoon the result had been reversed, our guys running out comprehensive 43 point winners. The margin belies how tough and close the game was. After we dominated the 2nd Qtr, Haileybury fought back in the 3rd quarter  to be close enough to snatch a victory, but our boys responded kicking 5 goals to 1 in the final quarter. In a best on ground performance, Joe Nowell turned in a career game kicking 7 goals. He was unstoppable. Unfortunately for Joe and the club he suffered what looked like a serious hamstring injury in the last minute of the game. Heartbreaking! Best players included Darcy James, Jai Florent, Cal Linehan, Will Nish and Spencer McLennan. Congrats to Jeremy Williams and Will Nish who made their Senior debuts.

In the earlier game the Reserves, lead by stand-in coach Danny Kelly, held on to win a close one by 10 points. Among the best players were Oskar Phillips, Lucas Monacella, Matt Lovejoy, Noah Beveridge, Lachlan Tedde and Shehan Gunasekera.

It was tough day for our U19 Prem team who found Old Brighton too strong at home. Our best included Mitch Davidson, Angus Bowd and Ned Bodi. It was different story for the 2’s who ventured out to Williamstown and won, despite kicking an extraordinary 4.15. The wind at Willy does play havoc. Featuring in our best were Saxon McLennan, Josh Mathews and Darcy Richards.

Over at Central Reserve both Women’s teams came away with big wins against Old Mazenod, which gives the Reserves team 2 from 2. The Seniors bounced back after their narrow loss the previous week by consolidating their defence after a couple of glitches last week. Zoe Barbakos, back at the club, showed her class kicking 5 goals. Other good players included Taylah Tysoe, Sienna Tedde, Cass Newman, Anna Sutcliffe and Emily Van de Water. Best players for the 2’s were Ruby Raymond, Lara Barker, Sophie Keogh, Amy Watkins and Melie Johnson.

Special mention to the Past Player Association who hosted the annual Anzac Lunch at Oak St, with a number of special guests including the CEO of VAFA Jason Reddick, Federal Member Zoe Daniels and a number RSL dignitaries. The highlight was the Anzac Memorial service held prior to the Seniors game. Special thanks to Ron Nicholson and Sean Coote.
