Half way mark season wrap

A quick recap on the season so far, with the reminder that this is a relatively new look side with a mix of recruits including Jai Florent, Tyson Murray, Darcy James, Reubenn Smith and Jeremy Williams, all from Seaford, and a big group of youngsters coming up from the successful U/19 team of 2023 including Ted Clayton, Nate Dear, Spencer McLennan, Will Nish, Tom O’Rourke, Luka Pecer, Petar Pecer, James Pepper, Ben Seers & Charlie Wilce.

At the start of the year, we also had a substantial long-term injury list which will impact us deep into the season - Joel De Natale, Joel Cusack, Ben Matthews, Connor Murphy, Tom Spencer & Josh Gorman included. We also have several players away in Europe for much of the season, including Liam Hayes & James Taylor.

See below for a round by round summary:

Round Result Match Commentary
Rd 1- De La Salle (Away L19 points

A competitive effort by the Sharks at the tricky Waverley Oval against a leading team.

Rd 2- Old Haileybury (Home) W 43 points

A great win in the Anzac Round, Haileybury are undefeated since then and now on top. Joe Nowell has a big day with 7 goals but tears his hammy as he kicks the last one.

Rd 3- Old Camberwell (Away) W 5 points

A come from behind last minute win with a Cal Linehan dash and a Will Skinner goal.

Rd 4- Caulfield Grammar (Home) L 2 points

Led narrowly all day although missing Joe, but Bluey’s team caught us right at the end.

Rd 5- Old Ivanhoe   (Home) L 6 points

Again had the lead at ¾ time but without injured Skipper Cal Linehan at FB they had a VFL import who came in and kicked 5 and created another 3.

Rd 6- Williamstown (Away) L 49 points

Went out to Williamstown without Skipper Cal Linehan & reigning B & F, Cal Heath, and lost to the bottom side who had a Port Melbourne import who also kicked 7. Josh Ward joins the injury list.

Rd 7- St Bedes (Home) W 65 points

Linehan & Heath back plus Ben Matthews off the long-term injury list. Riley Mihailovic kicks four.

Rd 8- Old Geelong (Home) W 37 points

Crucial game and Riley Mihailovic Will Nish are late withdrawals. Connor Murphy returns to the team and we see an outstanding debut by tall and mobile youngster, Luka Pecer, with two goals and plenty of the ball. Win the last quarter by 31 points.

Rd 9- Old Trinity (Away) L 63 points A tough road trip out to Bulleen with a number of additional players heading off to Europe. A disappointing result but McMaster and Heath were shining lights and Nate Dear took his season tally to 18 goals with two on the day.

So, we can now see that even minor team changes will affect match outcomes and there will be a fair slice of luck helping decide which of the eight teams sitting from 1st to 8th position will play finals (Beauy is currently in 7th spot and two games from 4th position) but having beaten the first and fourth teams we know that our best is good enough.

Over the next two weeks the boys play two of the top teams – and Old Haileybury (1st) – and then host De La (4th) at home on the 29th June in matches that will shape our season.
