Full Time Round 12 Pt 1

Full Time Round 12 Pt 1

It wasn’t the result we had wanted for our two Women’s teams on Saturday with both going down to Westbourne Grammarians at home. It was a disappointing outcome considering the stakes were a possible finals berth for both teams. Though not impossible, the likelihood of finals action now rests with wins and positive other results.

Despite that, there were a number of positives to come out of the two games. Firstly, there is an array of new players coming through the Women’s program, highlighted by the fact that three girls made their Senior debut on Saturday and played well – Sophie Crofts, Holly Bowles and Remy Barker. All three girls have come through our Junior system and all three have finals experience. Add to this the performance of defender Skye Shipton, who was our best player. Skye was co-captain of the premiership winning U18 Div 1 Girls last season.

Secondly, as new girls come into the teams, they will adapt to the faster pace of Senior football and to the game style of the Senior coaches, but that can take time. In the case of Skye, now 4 Senior games in, the transformation has been significant.

Thirdly, team work doesn’t happen overnight, it takes a while for players to understand each other. And this will come with more time together.

Back to Saturday’s games, credit to the two Westbourne teams who were determined and skilful, playing well in the conditions. They’ve certainly improved through the season.

Best players for the Seniors were Skye Shipton, Zoe Barbakos, Sophie Crofts and Sam Baisas, while best for the Reserves were Naimh Stainforth, Sophie Keogh, Maya Buhl and Tiana Schiers.
